Will a metal roof rust?

No. The core metal is treated with Galvalume(™) coating which resists oxidation better than plain carbon steel because the zinc and aluminum protect the underlying steel from the environment. Then it gets painted so no naturally occurring damage will allow rust. Plus, we intentionally do not cut with grinders because doing so can cause premature rusting due to the abrasive nature of grinder cutting.

What kind of underlayment do you use?

We use a high temperature, peel and stick underlayment that offers 100% coverage and seals all the fasteners.

How do you ventilate a steel roof?

We use a hidden ventilation system which is a proprietary ridge vent system we make in our shop.

What slope can you install a metal roof on?

The minimum slope we can install on is 0.5/12 (almost flat), and the maximum is almost 90 degrees.

How is paint applied to the roof?

The paint is a powder coating process that’s proprietary to each core manufacturer. Every manufacturer we deal with offers a 40-year minimum paint warranty on all of their painted products.

Does the roof stand up to hail or does it dent easily?

Each roofing material goes through engineered testing so each coil comes with a hail rating which is applied to the coil that you buy. We only use 24 gauge steel which is rated as a Class4 impact resistance rating, the highest rating available. This resists up to 2″ diameter hailstones and may reduce your home insurance premiums.

When can I install a steel roof and how long will it take?

Alpro Metal Roofing does all-season installation which typically takes approximately two weeks.

What gauge of steel should we use?

At Alpro Metal Roofing, we only use 24-gauge steel because of its durability and premium quality.

What is the difference between corrugated and standing seam roofs?

A standing seam roof has hidden fasteners while a corrugated roof has exposed fasteners. Corrugated panels are overlapped while standing seam panels are folded and crimped together.

Can a steel roof be installed over existing shingles?

Yes, although we will need to install a slip sheet between the two. This reduces disposal costs and keeps things out of the landfill. However, Alpro Metal Roofing prefers to take the old shingles off so we can assess the roof deck and make any upgrades necessary.

Do metal roofs attract lightning?

Extensive research has proven that metal roofing is no more likely to attract a lightning strike than any other type of roofing material. In fact, as a non-combustible material with the highest Class A fire-resistance rating, metal roofing is one of the best materials for homes in lightning-prone regions.

What are the energy efficient benefits?

Asphalt shingles attract heat into your attic which means that your cooling system has to work to keep this heat out of your house. Metal reflects heat, keeping heat out for better, more efficient cooling and a smaller carbon footprint.

Does the roof need to be painted? What maintenance is required?

There is little to no maintenance for a steel roof as long as you have snow retention to prevent mechanical units from being damaged. The paint is warrantied for 40 years but you can add roof coating options if you choose. With exposed fasteners, you have to replace the screws every 15 years.

Will a steel roof add resale value to my home?

Absolutely, but it’s more beneficial to own the home with the new steel roof because it lasts forever.
